TSMC's N2 process is not the bottleneck; the shortage of LPDDR5X mobile DRAM is preventing packaged A20 Pro chips from reaching assembly.
Independent tech journalist Tim Culpan stated that with only a few weeks remaining until the release of the iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Ultra, the yield rate of wafers for the A20 Pro processor produced using TSMC's N2 process is performing well. However, due to a shortage of LPDDR5X mobile DRAM, completed processor wafers cannot undergo subsequent packaging, resulting in inventory backlog and putting pressure on Apple and its supply chain for stocking. Tim Culpan mentioned that Apple and its assembly partners are urgently seeking more mobile device DRAM chip supplies. Currently, Apple mainly relies on Micron Technology for DRAM, while also sourcing from SK Hynix and Samsung. Tim Culpan noted that the TSMC N2 process is not the bottleneck affecting iPhone shipments, and the production of the A20 Pro processor is basically ready. (Interface).

AMD CEO Lisa Su proposed bringing back the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, set plan in motion before DDR5 shortages — AM4 CPU considered a ‘final gift’ to loyal fans of the decade-old socket The relaunch of the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D coincided with the memory chip shortage. AMD Director of Client Product Management Travis Kirsch sat down with a Japanese publication to share the backstory of the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D and its relaunch this year. Kirsch told MyNavi Tech+ [machine translated] that AMD CEO Lisa Su was one of the proponents of bringing back the groundbreaking X3D processor that first debuted in April 2022. While some may think this was a simple relaunch of a four-year-old processor, the company had to do extensive re-engineering and update its manufacturing process with TSMC just to bring it back. The decision to relaunch it was well-timed, too. While the world is suffering from extremely high DDR5 memory prices when it finally arrived in the middle of 2026, Kirsch said that “this was planned before changes in the memory market occurred, not as a countermeasure to DDR5 shortages,” and that it was “the final gift to local users who have used our AM4 for nearly a decade, offering systems that use DDR4 the last change to upgrade their PCs.” Beyond the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the Japanese publication also touched on AMD’s value offerings, or lack thereof. Four Ryzen 3 processors are available new today—one for AM5 and three for AM4—which raises the question of whether AMD is abandoning the entry-level market. Kirsch said that while the company aims to offer a product for every price point, AMD is mostly focused on the premium, high-performance gaming market — we see this in the October Steam Survey results, with AMD closing in on Intel at 48.4% CPU share. As for the affordable CPU market, he said it’s no longer as big as it used to be, as laptops have taken over this segment. Of course, any discussion with a tech executive these days would almost always touch on the memory chip shortage. “…there are things we can control and things we cannot. Market price trends are the result of everyone moving (and there’s nothing we can do about it),” Kirsch said. “We are simply focused on providing consumers with choices in any situation. This is to ensure that consumers have the opportunity to purchase the best AMD PCs, regardless of the price.” Get Tom's Hardware's best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. If we start seeing more types of chiplets on the desktop socket, rumored divergence between Zen 7 Silverking (8-core) and Silverton (16-core), etc. then I think they bring back Ryzen 3, and give it 6-8 cores. They could do it with a monolithic Krackan-tier APU die first (graphics enabled or disabled), and Silverking later. It will be interesting to see what happens to the 9600X's position during the Zen 6 generation. One rumor said there would be a 6-core at the bottom again, but whatever the 9600X morphs into could have 8-10 cores. Reply - MikeMIke86 At $350, it’s not a deal when the much cheaper 9600X outperforms by a significant amount. Just another money grab. They’re doing this because they’re no longer selling enough AM5 components.Reply - usertests MikeMIke86 said:At $350, it’s not a deal when the much cheaper 9600X outperforms by a significant amount. And the 9600X multithreading performance is only a little faster (6% in PassMark). The other benefit is being able to use cheaper or already owned DDR4 memory. Obviously, we would have loved to see a $200 price on the relaunched 5800X3D. But it's good that they are making more at all. More of the CPUs on Earth means more will be hanging around in the used market 5-10 years from now, driving the prices down. Goldman Sachs: It is expected that the tight storage supply will continue until 2028, raising target prices for SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics.
23/10/2026
Goldman Sachs released a report stating that the supply and demand situation for traditional DRAM, NAND, and HBM is expected to be tighter in 2027 than in 2026, and this tight situation will continue until 2028. This is expected to help memory companies maintain high profitability for at least the next few years. The bank believes that the market has not fully understood the sustainability of this memory upturn cycle, evidenced by the fact that the P/E ratios of most memory stocks are still only in the mid-single digits. Goldman Sachs will explore the differences in this cycle compared to the past, focusing mainly on: 1) higher demand visibility, coming from significant expansion of servers/AI combinations and the development of proxy AI; 2) constrained supply growth, due to slow capacity expansion and higher HBM conversion rates; 3) more powerful long-term agreements from customers and more efficient capital expenditure planning. The bank believes that these factors will support demand continuing to outstrip supply, forming a longer upward cycle than in the past. The bank expects that even by 2028, DRAM/NAND/HBM will all be in a state of supply shortage. Goldman Sachs has changed its valuation method for SK Hynix to the P/E method, raising the 12-month target price to 3.5 million Korean won at 9 times P/E, and also raised the 12-month target price for Samsung Electronics to 480,000 Korean won, reaffirming a "buy" rating. Based on the latest view of higher and more sustainable NAND prices, the bank has raised Kioxia's rating to "buy" with a 12-month target price of 93,000 Japanese yen, equivalent to a 7.8 times P/E ratio for the year ending in March 2028.

TSMC is sitting on $1 billion worth of finished iPhone chips with nowhere to go

Ripple effect: In the run-up to the launch of the foldable iPhone Ultra, iPhone 18, and iPhone 18 Pro, Apple and its assemblers are working to secure enough mobile DRAM. Apple leans heavily on Micron for these chips and also buys from SK Hynix and Samsung. People involved say they still expect to meet initial demand, but they worry online wait times could stretch and store inventory could run out quickly if the shortage continues.
Apple's next iPhones are built around a new chip and packaging setup that pairs the A20 Pro processor with high-performance DRAM at the wafer level, and that packaging step is being slowed by a tight memory market, according to sources who spoke with Taipei-based journalist Tim Culpan.
The core of the new lineup is the A20 Pro chip, Apple's first processor built on TSMC's N2 node, which moved into volume production earlier this year. The chip isn't shipped alone: it's packaged together with DRAM using TSMC's Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module process, or WMCM.
This replaces the Integrated Fan-Out (InFO) approach TSMC has used for about a decade, and is roughly "CoWoS for mobile," as Culpan has described it, drawing a parallel to the company's advanced CoWoS packaging for data
